When I was 18 I loved Biohazard, so much in fact, that I did a bunch of free artwork for them – hey I was young, idealistic and in “awe”. Over the years I had the fortune of hanging out with the guys – as well as producing shirts, album artwork and a refined logo.Biohazard split up a few years back, but to my amazement – today I saw this article on the very popular Digg.com “Biohazard Bassist Bashes BitTorrent.”

In this article Evan says: people who ’steal’ media by downloading it are “scumbags” and I will happily “kick the shit out of you”. But the real problem are BitTorrent sites.

At 18, I thought the music industry was just about the music and Biohazard made it clear that they “did it for the music”. They even have a song called Business, including the lyrics “Music’s for you and me – Not the fucking industry, You fucking tell us what is cool, You see we came from different schools”. If you ask me, this statement is exactly opposite of what Evan is now saying. (Yes I know people change, and I expect that – but this is a fundamental principal that shouldn’t change IMHO).

What Evan is forgetting, is the greatest bands of all time – the ones who have truly sustainable business models, the most loyal fans and the most profit – are the ones who let people share their music. Grateful Dead anyone?

Simply put, bands never make a boatload of coin from traditional record sales (unless they are on the charts, which Biohazard will never be) – instead, take a que from RadioHead, and make money off of Concerts and merchandise and build a long term loyal fan base.

Sorry to say it boys, the “Business” has changed – and the market place is not the same as it was 10 years ago – either you adapt or die. Music existed before the Industry – and it will be here after it too. RIP.
